Tan's latest masterpiece (one of two due for 2018) is the tale of Cicada - a data entry clerk in a bleak, colourless city. After seventeen years, it's time to retire. Cicada's life hasn't been kind - but the end of one life cycle is only the beginning of another. A short, simple tale loaded with meaning, finished with the quote:
"Calm and serene/ the sound of the Cicada/ penetrates the rock" - Matsuo Bash? (1644-94).
The second book, Tales from the Inner City - a companion to Tales from Outer Surburbia, is due in October.
