NZ Picture Books | Better Start Literacy | Year 2 Books

In this resonant story, Cam the mountain boy follows the river from its trickling source in the mountain snow all the way to the coast. The river leads him through forest, farms, and towns to the salty wind of the sea. Dramatic landscape illustrations evoke a North American landscape and are packed with detail to explore the world of the river.

Jem & Lucy's Review: Cam the mountain boy said to his grandfather, “I wish I could see the sea.” “One day we will go there,” said his grandfather. One morning Cam is playing in the snow when he hears the call of the stream, beckoning him to follow it to the sea. Through beautiful landscapes, Cam follows the water as it begins to merge with other streams and grow larger and larger until it finally meets the sea. On his journey, Cam encounters frogs, farms, and the bustling wharves and docks of the city. Kimberly Andrews, whose first book, Puffin the Architect, was shortlisted for both best picture book and best illustration in the 2019 NZ Book Awards for Children & Young Adults, has created beautiful artwork for the classic Joy Cowley story Song of the River (first published in 1994 with illustrations by Elizabeth Fuller). Kimberly Andrews’ stunningly beautiful illustrations are filled with details - like hidden, sleeping bears, an aerial view of farmlands, to an intricate cityscape. Her art captures the awe and joy of nature through the eyes of an intrepid child explorer.
